THE SULTAN OF SAUSAGE
Good evening. This is Dead Legends. The daily newsletter that loves baseball as much as Squints loved Wendy Peffercorn.
Let’s dive in.
Today’s story is about Babe Ruth’s trip to the hospital.
George Herman Ruth was a man of excess.
He enjoyed everything that was available to him as a baseball superstar during his 22-year career.
Booze, food, and women mostly.
“He could eat more, drink more, smoke more, swear more, and enjoy himself more than any contemporary.”
This dude had the tolerance of John Daly and an appetite like Kobayashi.
Legend has it, the Babe used to have a porterhouse steak garnished with half-a-dozen fried eggs and potatoes on the side for breakfast.
Then he’d wash it down with a quart of bourbon and ginger ale.
Just like Kobayashi, Ruth absolutely LOVED hot dogs, but they were almost the death of him.
In April of 1925, he blacked out and collapsed in a North Carolina train station.
He was actually reported dead in the papers.
