THE SCHEME

Good evening. This is Dead Legends. The newsletter that feels like a cold beer at the ballpark - flavorful, refreshing, and leaves you feelin’ good.

Let’s dive in.

A few weeks ago, we did a story about Rick Camp’s magic moment.

Camp hit one of the most improbable home runs of all time in one of the longest games ever.

Today’s story is about his life after baseball, which involved a three-year trip prison.

Rick spent all nine years of his big-league career with the Atlanta Braves.

He was never the best player on the team by any stretch of the imagination, but he was always solid.

Camp threw over 900 innings, and recorded a lifetime ERA of 3.37.

His baseball career ended in ’86, when the Braves released him before the start of the season.

20 years later, he was sentenced to federal prison for conspiring to steal more than $2 million from a mental health facility.

So where did everything go wrong?

After baseball, Rick returned to his family farm in Trion, GA.

At some point, he spent some time as a lobbyist - along the way, he connected with Robin Williams.

Not that one, this guy.

Rep. Williams worked behind the scenes to get his friend Michael Brockman put in charge of the facility, and together they gave lucrative contracts to their friends, who in turn kicked back money to Williams.

Rick was convicted of conspiracy, health care fraud, and two counts of money laundering - he was sentenced to 37 months.

Despite his criminal activity, Camp was still loved by the Braves organization and their fans.

Up until his passing in 2013, he was regularly welcomed back to Old Timers' festivities by the Braves, even after his release from prison in ’07.

Randall Thompson signed with the Toronto Blue Jays back in 2011 to chase his childhood dream of throwing baseballs for a living.

Unfortunately, his dreams of pitching in the show didn’t work out, but I’d argue it was a blessing in disguise.

A few years later, while Thompson was coaching at Florida Tech, the idea hit him like a 100mph comebacker to the dome piece - Mugs made out of baseball bats.

Since then, Dugout Mugs has become the go-to drinkware company for baseball fans across the world.

Here’s a few guys you might know that drink from a Dugout Mug.

They’ve got an epic collection of products, so I put together a little list to help you get exactly what you want.

STRANGE NAMES

If you're just joining us, we play this game every day where we try to find the weirdest names throughout baseball history.

Why? Don't ask us, it's just something we like to do.

If you've been rocking with us for awhile now, you know what time it is.

Today's winner is:

Ricky played for a handful of team over an 11-year career, but his best years were definitely with the Brewers.

During his time in Milwaukee, he got voted to his first-and-only all-star team, and racked up 47 of his 63 career wins.

He was included in the Mitchell Report when it was released in ‘07, but he was already retired at that point.

These days, bones is a bullpen coach with the Nationals.
