THE ROGUE BASEBALL

Good evening. This is Dead Legends. The daily newsletter that drops into your inbox like an 0-2 curveball from Jhoan Duran.

Let’s dive in.

Today’s story is about a minor league brawl that sent a fan to the hospital and put a player in jail.

Back on June 24, 2008, Julio Castillo was pitching for the Peoria Chiefs, a Chicago Cubs affiliate.

During a game against the Dayton Dragons, a 10-minute bench-clearing brawl broke out.

He says the throw wasn't intended to hurt anyone, but the ball sailed on him and drilled a fan.

The fan fell the floor immediately, knocked out cold.

He was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a concussion.

In his testimony, the fan claimed the baseball struck him so hard that it left seam marks on his scalp and he couldn't wear a hard hat for his job because of the swelling.

The felony assault could’ve cost Julio eight years in prison, but ultimately the court felt he was remorseful for his actions.

He was given 30 days jail time, and three years probation.

Officials in the Midwest League suspended and fined 15 players and both teams' managers for the fight.

Julio Castillo's US work visa was revoked, so he had to return to the Dominican Republic.

He never played pro baseball in the US again.

STRANGE NAMES

If you're just joining us, we play this game every day where we try to find the weirdest names throughout baseball history.

Why? Don't ask us, it's just something we like to do.

If you've been rocking with us for awhile now, you know what time it is.

Today's winner is:

Frank Ward aka “Piggy” wasn't a big man in stature, but what he lacked in height, he made up for with heart.

The guy always found a way to get on - he had a .419 career OBP.

Although his career was relatively short (221 games over parts of six seasons), that’s still pretty damn impressive.

Coincidentally, the one-and-only dinger of his career came off another ballplayer we featured on Strange Names last month, Brickyard Kennedy.
