THE GLOVE THIEF
Good evening. This is Dead Legends. We’re the kind of guys who would never put our hand in another man’s glove without asking.
Let’s dive in.
Today’s story is about a bonehead ballplayer who got released in the most embarrassing way possible.
It doesn’t matter who you are, or who you’re related to, there’s some things you just can’t do in a big-league locker room.
Rubén Rivera learned that lesson the hard way.
You might know Rubén from the time he made one of the worst base-running mistakes in the history of baseball, but he’s also related to the greatest closer of all time; Mariano Rivera.
Rubén was drafted by the Yankees in 1990, and made it to the show five years later.
He was always seen as one of the top prospects in the organization, but never lived up to the hype.
Rivera was traded multiple times throughout his career, and ultimately finished with 64 homers and a .216 average.
The Yankees gave him a second chance in 2002, after his cousin Mariano “put in a good word.”
But less than a month later, Rubén made a big mistake.
One day he decided to steal a bat and glove from Jeter’s locker, and then sold the memorabilia for $2,500.
When his coaches and teammates found out, they were shocked.
First off, this is a guy who made almost three million dollars in the big leagues, it’s not like he was in dire need of the money.
Secondly, WTF bro??
Joe Torre said he was saddened and shocked by what Rivera did, and quoted: “The clubhouse is a special place. It’s our sanctuary. It’s a big part of what we do. Trust is very important.”
It was a unanimous decision by the team that Rubén be released so they could put the matter to rest.
In the end, here’s what he had to say about the incident:
“Everyone makes mistakes. I haven’t killed anybody. It was just a moment when I wasn’t thinking right. I’ve repented.”
The next year was Rubén final season playing in the MLB.

STRANGE NAMES
If you're just joining us, we play this game every day where we try to find the weirdest names throughout baseball history.
Why?
Don't ask us, it's just something we like to do.
If you've been rocking with us for awhile now, you know what time it is.
Today's winner is:
Smoky Joe had an interesting route to the big leagues.
He started out playing with the “Bloomer Girls,” which were teams mostly made up of women.
Wood joined the Red Sox in 1908, and within a few years he became an absolute animal on the mound.
Without a doubt, his most insane season was 1912 when he went 34-5 with 10 shutouts and 35 CG’s.
He also won his first of three World Series championships that year.
Unfortunately, his pitching career was cut short when he broke his thumb, but he later reinvented himself as an outfielder.
